Sayan Ubud Spa in Indonesia

Since its inception in 1988, the Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan has served as a sanctuary for those seeking peace and quietude in the tranquil depths of Bali.

Amid verdant rice terraces, ancient shrines, age-old banyan trees and lush jungle, the resort seems to emerge from the mountain mists like an ethereal kingdom. The entrance lies across a long bridge that leads to a pond and it is along this stretch where the pulse instinctively slows and the resort's ultra modern surroundings signal the beginnings of a spiritual getaway.

Nestled in Bali's central highlands, the spa at Sayan offers the calming influence of the sacred Ayung River and the beauty of lush, terraced rice fields rising in the distance. Here, the earth's elements play an integral part in restoring inner balance. Unique rituals and beauty therapies abound, all using a blend of ayurvedic traditions, natural clays, exotic spices and locally grown herbs and flowers. Through a celebration of the healing powers of nature, the spa's treatments soothe, rejuvenate and refresh frazzled city-dwelling souls.

A nod to this philosophy is its signature Suci Dhara treatment. Referring to the awakening and balancing of the body, heart and soul, the Suci Dhara treatment begins with a scalp massage to improve circulation and relax muscle and nerve fibres. Warm herbal oils are then rhythmically dripped onto the forehead for mental relaxation and clarity. To nourish the nervous system and aid detoxification, a warm herbal oil massage is administered before a steam bath completes the ritual and a comforting mug of herbal dosha tea is served. Indeed, the Suci Dhara works wonders for both the body and mind.

The spa's interiors combine the textures and native warmth from local stone facings, teakwood cabinets and floorings and glass windows shielded discreetly with Japanese rice paper blinds.

Customized terrazzo massage tables and freestanding soak tubs provide a modern contrast to traditional layered along along thatched roofs. Spa villas for couples are connected to outdoor bathing facilities that offer steam showers and large bathtubs. The largest of these is the Cendana Villa, measuring 93 square metres (1,000 square feet) and designed for full- and half-day visitors.

Outside, in the centre of a lotus pond, a private swimming pool and lounge area is the ideal place to enjoy a light meal prepared by Four Season's acclaimed chefs. From this vantage point, the panoramic view of emerald rice terraces is an affirmation that life is good indeed.
