The calm road that leads to the Alila Ubud offers a glimpse of what lies ahead at one of Ubud's most sought after resorts. Past a traditional Balinese temple and through emerald sculpted rice paddies, Alila Ubud rises in the distance. It is a serene hillside retreat and home to one of Bali's most celebrated and established spas.
First opened in 1996, The Mandara Spa was given a facelift in 2002, bestowing upon it a delicate sophistication that simply exudes the treasures of peace and quiet. As soon as you step into its breezy central foyer and feel the pebble-deck flooring underfoot softly massaging your bare feet, you begin to prepare for the sensorial journey that lies ahead.
The 840-square-metre (9,040 square-foot) spa comprises one double spa pavilion, a double spa suite, another suite dedicated to Thai massages, and two single spa suites for those who prefer to bask in the pleasures of the spa alone. Its design features traditional Indonesian touches such as alang alang roofs. local stonework and a variety of Indonesian timbers, alongside silk fabrics that line the walls and cover the soft furnishings.
On the spa menu is a wide range of health and beauty treatments, instilled with the allure of ancient traditions paired with the sophistication of modern spa techniques and products including the exclusive Elemis range.
Various Asian cultures have inspired the treatments offered, with everything from ayurveda and traditional Balinese massages, to hot stone therapy, Thai massages and foot reflexology.lf you find yourself spoiled for choice, then make the Mandara Massage-the spa's signature treatment- your first option. A sublime experience to say the least, the Mandara Massage brings together a unique blend of five different massage styles-Japanese shiatsu, Thai, Hawaiian Iomi lomi, Swedish and Balinese. What makes this treatment particularly exquisite is the careful synchronization of two therapists working together on your body. To clear the mind and encourage deep relaxation, the ayurvedic shirodhara is a definite must. This oil flow treatment begins with an ayurvedic pressure massage before a gentle flow of aromatic oil is poured onto the third eye area of the forehead. Guests emerge refreshed and uplifted from the so-minute experience, ready to face the modern world again with newfound vigour.
Each Mandara Spa experience is gently fused with the daily rituals of Balinese life. These small touches may not be immediately evident to the guests, but it manifests itself in the soft calm of the therapists, in the serenity of the surroundings, the intoxicating aromas and the overall air of tranquillity that welcomes and soothes every visitor that comes to Alila Ubud. And should guests want to take home a piece of this sublime world, the boutique stocks the spa's signature products that are all made from high quality natural ingredients.
